AROMATHERAPY - Chapter X Top Twelve Essential Oils Everyone lists their “top ten” differently--perhaps depending on what sells the most (could be what is most affordable), what they learned first, or simply what they can access easiest in their location. I can’t help it, these are twelve I depend on. I am delineating my 'Top Twelve’ based on what we will use the most in my daily life. Ones that do double and triple duty. You can bet Lavender, Tea Tree and Eucalyptus are on every list. Later we will get into exotic and interesting essential oils. This is just a list of my favorite primary essential oils, the ones I would want in my family medical bag, and their top contributions and attributes. Dosage and application will be in the next chapter.

Black Cumin oil--I find to be a most potent analgesic and anti-inflammatory drug. Black cumin oil is also very high in antioxidants and excellent against bacteria-including staph. ~

Blue Chamomile--Anti-inflammatory, antispasmodic, nerve calming. Great for IBS, nerve disorders, insomnia. Perfect mixed with lavender for sweet dreams. ~

Clary Sage--Sedative, calming, relaxing, euphoric, anti-wrinkle, depression, migraine, stress and nervous disorders. ~

Clove--Perfect for numbing mouth, canker, dental issues & rinse. Antiviral, antibiotic, antiseptic. ~

Eucalyptus--Antiseptic, anti-viral, decongestant, stimulating, refreshing and purifying. Used for respiratory disorders, flu, body aches, insect bites, immune-booster, and insect deterrent. ~

Geranium, Rose--Excellent for hemorrhoids-numbing/healing, skin eruptions, PMS, calming, reflecting. ~

Lavender--Antiseptic, antidepressant, calming, stimulating (in higher concentrations), sedative, insect deterrent. Uses include acne, athlete’s foot, dandruff, burns, boils, cold sores, sunburn, wounds, bites, stings, inflammation, asthma, flu, headache, insomnia, hypertension, PMS, vertigo, migraine, shock, nervous tension and stress, to name a few. ~

Lemon--Antiseptic, sedative, stimulant, astringent. Uplifting, used for acne, oily skin, cold sores, respiratory disorders, colds, flu, fever, arthritis, insect bites and as a grease cutting agent. ~

Lemongrass -- Lemongrass smells like lemon essential oil than lemon essential oil itself. It is my #2 favorite because bugs cannot stand it. After heavy rains or just standing water near my house-I drop a few pipettes full of this and I do not see a mosquito in miles! No-see-ums {gnats} also share the same disdain. I cannot stand the smell of Citronella and find it way over rated. Citronella only became famous after some good marketers were stuck with fields of it - years ago - in India. As far as pets, I may put one drop on the nape of my dogs neck and fleas and ticks do not like it either. I put it in my mop water and air vents. Luckily people like the scent and this includes both genders. Essential oils are so very powerful be areful when using them on pets. So put Lemongrass on your list because it is the most utilitartian essential oil on this list.

Peppermint--Soothing to muscles, rashes, digestion, warm and tingly. Anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, antiviral, digestive aid, helps muscle aches, acne, respiratory disorders, colds, flu, fever. ~

Rosemary--Antiseptic, antiviral, astringent, analgesic, anti-fungal, circulatory stimulant. Helps acne, dandruff, oily hair, insect deterrent, stimulates scalp and hair growth, diuretic, muscle pain, respiratory disormune- boosting, nervous anxiety and stress. ~

Tea Tree--Anti-inflammatory, anti-fungal, antibacterial, antiviral, antiseptic. Helps with acne, athlete’s foot, nail fungus, burns, cold sores, warts, infected wounds, colds, flu, fever, immune-boosting, ~ Ylang Ylang--Aphrodisiac, antidepressant, antiseptic, euphoric, nervous sedative, circulatory stimulant. Comparable in performance to Neroli, (orange Blossom). I use tea tree in an ethanol base to spray my shower and eliminate mold. Great because other pests do not care for it either - so Tea Tree does double duty.
